The koi pond in August (2014)

This is a picture of the koi pond in our backyard in north Alabama. The pond was hand-dug in the hard and stoney Alabama red clay and limestone rock. The water garden is three (3) feet deep, surrounded by a 12-14 inch plant shelf. Plants are minimal in the pond, primarily consisting of water lilies and a water lotus. The last couple of years there was a net covering the pond due to a heron using the pond as his/her personal sushi bar. The backyard water garden is stocked with goldfish, koi, and black fantail fish. Additionally, the pond contains bullfrogs (raised from tadpoles placed in the pond) and salamanders (placed in the pond by my boys. The pond is surrounded by limestone rock picked up locally from roadsides and friends. The area around the pond is enclosed with a wooden privacy fence. The gardens are banana trees, flowers, fruit and vegetable plants. A rustic, handcrafted sidewalk circles the pond. There are three areas that contain a bench for shade/sun enjoyment depending on the time of day and your gaols, whether it be sipping a Sweet Lucy in the shade or sunning in a private area surrounded by nature.
